Prologue
Loud, screeching brakes mingled with the distant voices of the many passersby were quickly drowned out by the wailing of a beggar woman. I felt confused as my weary mind tried to take in all these strange, new surroundings. I stood near my family and our mountain of luggage waiting to see what would happen next. The warm spring air and sunshine hinted that things were more hopeful than my current environment suggested. Behind us loomed a large, dirty train station with huge broken windows that allowed for an easy passageway to hundreds of pigeons who called it home, and in front of us, I saw where the loud cries I had just heard were coming from. The wailing beggar woman was crawling around the parking lot moving slowly on all fours, almost like a dog. She had a severe deformity that had left her with limited range of motion because her knees bent forward not backward. It was a little scary to me. However, the even more pressing concern was that we had just arrived in Arad, Romania, 7,000 miles away from our home, and as we surveyed those around us, it became clear that our contact who was supposed to pick us up was nowhere in sight. We were stranded….
